2017 Adobe Town Wild Horse Gather
Gather start date: Approximately mid-February
Purpose of Gather:
The BLM Wyoming, Rawlins Field Office is undertaking a new research project with the University of Wyoming (UW) to study wild horses in Southwest Wyoming.
The purpose of the research is to enable UW to assist the BLM with learning about seasonal movements, habitat selection and migration between Adobe Town Herd Management Area (ATHMA) and the Colorado border as well as between the Adobe Town and Salt Wells Herd Management Areas.
The BLM Rawlins Field Office entered into a two-year agreement with the University of Wyoming’s Department of Wildlife Habitat Restoration Ecology within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
The research will allow the BLM to make better informed decisions regarding where in the HMA horses should be released following gathers of horses that have strayed from the ATHMA.
Details of Gather:
The horses will be gathered using bait-trapping. Bait-trapping involves a free-standing corral with an attractant located inside to lure in the wild horses. The attractant can be water, feed, or supplement. When wild horses become accustomed to the trap and enter, the gate can be closed remotely by contractor. Once captured, the mares will be collared and then released.
Public Observation:
Viewing opportunities will be limited given the nature of this gather. Also, there is no way to predict which days will actually result in trapping horses. On most days trapping will not occur.
Public viewing will be allowed at the release sites of the collared mares. We’ll keep a list of people that would like to attend the releasing of the collared mares and notify them at least one day prior to the releases. Public viewing is always allowed at the wild horse holding facility overlook in Rock Springs.
Adoption Information:
No horses will be permanently removed from the HMA as a result of this gather. Find upcoming adoption events for wild horses in your area.
Background:
The results of this research will help BLM improve their management decisions in HMAs. The use of GPS collars on the 30 Adobe Town mares will give BLM insight on (1) how these horses move into, though, and across the public-private land; (2) how horses select rangeland’s resources across seasons; and (3) how porous or not-porous the Colorado-Wyoming state line is for horses.
Once the horses have been collared, they will be returned to the HMA and data collection would begin over an 18 month period. BLM and the University of Wyoming will conduct field checks during this period.
The Adobe Town HMA is within AML so no horses will be removed. All gathered horses will be returned to the HMA. Learn more about the Adobe Town HMA.

Summary:
(Area A) Contractor (Sampson) notified BLM today that two bait sites were visited by wild horses. Contractors will be setting up panels at those two locations.
(Area B) Contractor (Warner) set up panels at one bait location. 28 wild horses were in the immediate area. 18 wild horses were in the panels at one time but 3 were still outside. The contractor chose not to close the gate until all horses were in cleanly, which resulted with no horses captured today.

A death labeled as "acute" is when an animal dies or is euthanized due to acute injuries or medical conditions brought about by the gather and removal process including those that occur during capture, sorting and holding at the gather site. This term will include animals that die for known or unknown reasons thought to be related to gather activities.
A death labeled as "chronic/pre-existing" is when an animal dies or is euthanized for reasons related to chronic or pre-existing conditions such as body condition, lameness, serious physical defects, etc. This term will include animals that are euthanized for conditions not brought about by the gather activity.
